Jeffrey Dean Morgan 'Shanghai'd in Thailand

Joins cast that includes John Cusack, Gong Li and Ken Watanabe

LOS ANGELES -- Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan of "Supernatural" television fame has inked a deal to appear in the Weinstein Co.'s period piece "Shanghai" alongside John Cusack, Gong Li and Ken Watanabe.

Morgan, repped by the William Morris Agency and Rob Gomez, plays Connor, an American killed in Japanese-occupied Shanghai before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Cusack's Paul Soames sets out to investigate his friend's murder and discovers a larger secret that the government is hiding.

Mikael Hafstrom ("1408") is directing from a script by Hossein Amini ("The Four Feathers").

Phoenix's Mike Medavoy and Barry Mendel are producing, with Arnie Messer exec utive producing. The film shot in the U.K. in May and has moved its production to Thailand. It is set for a Christmas Day release.

"Shanghai" was supposed to film in its namesake city in China but local authorities denied the Weinsteins permits.

The Weinstein Co launched its Asian Film Fund in August, earmarking $285 million for a planned 21 films over the next six years.
