Jenni Rivera's Death: Televisa, Mun2 Air Special Tributes to the Singer

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican network Televisa and U.S.-based mun2 on Sunday were airing special broadcasts dedicated to singer Jenni Rivera, who died in a plane crash en route to central Mexico.

A popular banda music singer and reality TV performer on the Televisa program La Voz Mexico (The Voice Mexico), Rivera was a household name in the Spanish-speaking world. Televisa interrupted its regular programming Sunday to air special news coverage of the accident.

The cast and crew of La Voz Mexico, in which Rivera participated as a music trainer, expressed their condolences to the family, friends and fans of Rivera while reflecting on her career accomplishments. Singer and friend Paulina Rubio broke out in tears during the impromptu homage to Rivera.

Rivera also was the star of mun2's reality show I Love Jenni. The Spanish-language network said it will air two previously produced I Love Jenni specials at 11 p.m. and midnight EST on Sunday. In addition, sibling Telemundo broadcast a two-hour primetime special on the singer that was re-aired on mun2.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Rivera family and the families of her team," mun2 GM Diana Mogollon and Telemundo Media president Emilio Romano said in a joint statement.

News of Rivera's death was getting extensive international media coverage and was generating significant traffic on social media sites late Sunday.

Actress Eva Longoria wrote on Twitter: "My prayers go out to her family. We lost a legend today."

A headline on the website of the Mexican daily Excelsior summed it up: "The Diva of Banda Is Dead."
