Dive is based on the true love story of Cuban diver Francisco 'Pipin' Ferreras and the French-born diver Audrey Mestre. Under his guidance and training, Mestre became a freediver who broke several world records. However, Mestre died while attempting a breath-hold dive over 500 feet. She was only 28.
Dana Stevens, who penned the adaptation of Travis McGee/Deep Blue Goodbye for Fox, wrote the current draft. Laeta Kalogridis, who worked with Cameron on Avatar, wrote a previous draft.
It's unclear what stage the talks are in with Jennifer Lawrence. It is known she at least has the offer to star. Whether a deal is made remains to be seen.
The actress and director worked together on Hunger Games: Catching Fire as well as the two Mockingjay movies, the second of which opens later this year. Jennifer Lawrence is in preproduction to star in Joy, which is directed by David O. Russell.
