Altitude has acquired the film, starring Stephan James as the iconic athlete.

Having bowed in U.S. theaters last weekend, the Jesse Owens biopic Race has now been picked up for U.K. distribution.

Stephen Hopkins' film — starring Stephan James alongside Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons and William Hurt — was bought by Altitude Film Distribution, which also has Green Room, Time Out of Mind, Alone in Berlin and Asif Kapadia's upcoming Maradona on its slate. The distributor helped steer Kapadia's previous doc Amy to record-breaking success in its home market.

"With the Rio Olympics just around the corner, and the 80th anniversary of Owens’ success, it couldn’t be a better time to celebrate such an icon on the big screen," said Altitude's head of distribution Hamish Moseley.

The deal was negotiated between Altitude’s Will Clarke and Mister Smith Entertainment’s David Garrett.
