Marie Henein — who will now defend the media personality — last week publicly joked that he regards acts of cruelty as "foreplay"

Top Canadian criminal lawyer Marie Henein last week reportedly joked publicly that Jian Ghomeshi regards acts of cruelty as "foreplay."

On Wednesday, Ghomeshi hired Henein to defend the former CBC/PRI radio host should a widening police investigation lead to criminal charges. The Toronto News Service reported Henein, co-founder of of Henein Hutchison LLP, was emceeing an Oct. 29 gala dinner for the Criminal Lawyers Association in Toronto when her ribbing turned to Ghomeshi three days after he was fired by the Canadian network.

"As criminal lawyers we represent people who have committed heinous acts. Acts of violence. Acts of depravity. Acts of cruelty. Or as Jian Ghomeshi likes to call it, foreplay,” Henein said, according to the Torstar News Service. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel gathering to honor past presidents of the Criminal Lawyers Association included Ontario judges that may hear Ghomeshi's case if it comes to court.

Ghomeshi isn't the only one to lawyer up. The CBC on Tuesday named top Toronto labor lawyer Janice Rubin to investigate workplace harassment complaints by co-workers against the disgraced radio host. And CBC lawyers on Wednesday filed a notice of motion to dismiss Ghomeshi's $55 million lawsuit against the broadcaster because it claims the legal action is "without merit and an abuse of the court's process."

In all, nine woman have come forward with allegations of sexual violence against Ghomeshi, with three being interviewed as part of the police investigation.

Also Wednesday, the Toronto Star newspaper reported the first male accuser, Jim Hounslow, a former York University student during the early 1990s who alleges Ghomeshi, a fellow student, "grabbed my genitals and fondled them." None of the accusations against Ghomeshi have been proven in court.
