Jimmy Kimmel Apologizes to Caitlyn Jenner for His Jokes About Her Transition
“We didn’t know what was happening, we thought you were just vain."
On Tuesday's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Caitlyn Jenner light-heartedly teased Jimmy Kimmel for the jokes he and other late-night hosts have made at her expense since her transition, and he apologized to her.
When she walked onstage, Kimmel said it's "unusual" that he's now meeting her as a woman after having met her in the past before her transition.
"Is it strange for you to look in the mirror and go, 'Hey, now I'm who I wanted to be'?" he asked Jenner.
"No. I wake up in the morning and I have a feeling of peace," she responded. Jenner talked about news of her transition being "hammered all over the media for the longest time" and added, "In fact, guys like you making some jokes..."
She trailed off and Kimmel said, “Right, but we didn’t know what was happening, we thought you were just vain." He continued, laughing, “We didn’t know what was going on. Sorry about that, by the way.”
"Now he’s going to apologize," joked Jenner. "But I accept your apology." She mentioned she also gave Jimmy Fallon a "real hard time" for mocking her as well.
While visiting with Kimmel, Jenner also talked about the Instagram post she just put up of herself with Steven Tyler, whom she met at a fundraiser in Minneapolis.
Jenner said she told Tyler that his song "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" was her "theme song" before she came out, and that she used to drive around in her car listening to it and it made her feel good.
Jenner received backlash from the trans community for calling the song her "favorite song," as it is often used to mock the transgender community. For example, Fox News in 2013 was criticized for playing the song over a photo of Chelsea Manning, who had recently come out as trans.
