Jimmy Kimmel Recaps Oscars Snafu: "Clyde Threw Bonnie Under the Bus!"
Kimmel was sitting next to Matt Damon when the onstage commotion occured, and Damon told the host he heard the stage manager say they got the winner wrong.
After what might be the biggest Oscars snafu in history, Jimmy Kimmel took to his late-night show on Monday night to give his take on what happened when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly presented the best picture award to La La Land instead of Moonlight. He also revealed how Matt Damon and Denzel Washington helped him realize what was happening.
"What Warren did is he was confused, so he handed it to Faye and let her read the winner," said Kimmel. "In other words, Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus. It was a slick move."
Kimmel said that during the mixup he was seated in the audience preparing to end the Oscars next to Damon, with whom Kimmel jokingly had a back-and-forth throughout the ceremony, extending their ongoing "feud."
"We noticed some commotion going on, and Matt says, 'I think I heard the stage manager say they got the winner wrong,'" said Kimmel on his show. "The stage manager is never on camera. It’s very unusual."
Kimmel said that after he joined the commotion onstage, Washington caught his attention to point out that Moonlight director Barry Jenkins still needed to give his acceptance speech now that the film had won best picture.
"People around me said, 'Oh, did you pull a prank of some kind?' " Kimmel added. "If I had pulled a prank I wouldn’t just have the wrong winner’s name on the envelope. When they opened it there would be, like, a Bed Bath and Beyond coupon at the end of it."
After the show, Kimmel said, he spoke with Beatty in the green room. Beatty told him the card he was given had Emma Stone's name on it, resulting in the fact that Stone and Beatty held the two copies of the best actress card that PricewaterhouseCoopers made instead of Beatty holding the best picture card.
Kimmel, however, joked that Dunaway made a "getaway" before having to give an explanation.
"Faye Dunaway made quite a getaway. She got the hell out of there. She read the wrong name and she split. She wanted no part of it."
Kimmel released fake "security footage" from backstage at the Oscars, making it seem like it was all Guillermo's fault that the envelopes got mixed up.
Guillermo was on the red carpet ahead of the show, giving celebrities like Sting and Scarlett Johansson swigs of tequila from his purse flask. He asked Vince Vaughn if he was going to try harder to get nominated for an Oscar next year, got a kiss from Charlize Theron and cut off Matt Damon to stop him from talking.
Kimmel also talked about the Oscars set collapsing during rehearsal. "If I had been hit by that, I could have been the first person in history to both host and appear in the 'In Memoriam,'" he said.
