Late-Night Hosts Tackle Trump's Pope Meeting: "His Holiness Met His Bigliness"

"Oh, snap. The pope just called the president chubby," said Stephen Colbert.

Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers all addressed President Donald Trump's visit to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis on their respective late-night shows Wednesday night.

"Today was an historic day, a holy day, maybe even an A-holey day, as his Holiness met his Bigliness at the Vatican today," joked Jimmy Kimmel.

The late-night host went on to comment that Trump thought the Vatican looked like "one of the bathrooms at his house."

Speaking about the picture of Trump smiling beside a seemingly scowling Pope Francis, Kimmel said, "He doesn't have much of a pope-r face." He then showed pictures of Pope Francis smiling with such other world leaders as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin and former President Barack Obama.

Showing a clip of Trump's meeting with the pope, Kimmel remarked how much of an honor it was for the president, particularly given "what's going on between him and Melania lately," referencing another recent clip that seemed to show the first lady swatting the president's hand away when he tried to hold her hand. Kimmel then showed footage of Trump and Pope Francis intercut with scenes of the president trying in vain to hold hands with the pope.

Kimmel also told his audience that he had special audio from the meeting. As a video clip showed Trump leaning toward Pope Francis' ear, audio from the infamous Access Hollywood tape played, eliciting groans from the studio audience. "Is nothing sacred?" Kimmel asked, smiling.

Stephen Colbert also dedicated part of his monologue to talking about Trump's visit with the pope. He joked that Trump planned to re-gift the reading materials Pope Francis gave Trump, including his encyclical on climate change, to Mike Pence.

Colbert was especially tickled by Pope Francis asking Melania Trump what she feeds Trump. "What do you give him to eat, potizza?" Potizza is a high-calorie pastry served in Slovenia.

"Oh, snap. The pope just called the president chubby," said Colbert, gleefully. He then welcomed Cartoon Pope Francis out to roast Trump. "We must love the sinner, almost as much as the sinner loves the dinner," joked Cartoon Pope Francis.

Seth Meyers, like Colbert and Kimmel was amused by the expression on Pope Francis' face in the photograph of him with the Trump family. "Only Trump can turn the 'cool Pope' into Mike from Breaking Bad," he said.

"We don't know what they talked about but since it was only 30 minutes we can assume it wasn't confession," joked Meyers.
