Joan Rivers Book Sales Spike 70,750 Percent
Yes, you read that number correctly
Comedienne Joan Rivers’ death has sent her book sales skyrocketing. Within hours of the announcement of her passing, Diary of a Mad Diva sales had shot up 70,750 percent on Amazon. The book, which just came out in July, is now the No. 2 best-selling book at the giant e-tailer, moving up from No. 1,417.
Her earlier book, 2012’s I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me (featuring her tongue-in-cheek plans for her funeral) also saw a big jump, with sales up 17,496 percent to land at No. 55 on Amazon’s list of its top 100 best-selling books. It had been ranked No. 9,678.
The books were No. 1 and No. 2 on the company’s “Movers and Shakers” list, which tracks the biggest gainers in sales over the past 24 hours. Such jumps are not unusual. Steve Jobs’ death almost three years ago produced a similar gargantuan spike in sales for Walter Isaacson’s biography of the Apple founder.
A comparable rise could not be ascertained on BN.com, the online site for Barnes & Noble. Apple’s iBook store doesn’t update results as quickly as Amazon.
