Joey Kovar Cause of Death 'Inconclusive' For Now
The 'Real World: Hollywood' and 'Celebrity Rehab' star had a history of drug addiction, but an autopsy conducted Saturday could not say what killed him.
Authorities continue to investigate the death of Joey Kovar, the Real World: Hollywood and Celebrity Rehab 3 star whose body was discovered Friday in his hometown of Chicago.
An autopsy performed Saturday could not determine the cause of death for the 29-year-old reality star, pending the results of a toxicological test, the Chicago Tribune reports. Law enforcement officials do not suspect foul play in his death.
Kovar had public battles with addiction during his 2008 stint on the Real World, during which he left the show temporarily to seek treatment. After his return, he left a second time to avoid a possible relapse. He appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2009, but began to use ecstasy and cocaine not long after.
Though the official cause of death has not been determined, law enforcement sources told TMZ it is believed Kovar took a lethal cocktail of Viagra, cocaine and alcohol at a woman’s house late Thursday night. The woman, Stacey Achterhof, reportedly discovered Kovar Friday morning with blood coming from his nose and ears, as well as blackened eyes, all signs of a drug overdose.
Despite Kovar’s history of drug use, his family said he had been sober for about six months and was seeking work as an actor.
"Everything was going very well," David Kovar, Joey’s brother, told the Tribune. "The very, very last thing that our family is suspecting is drugs."
Kovar leaves behind two children, a 3-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter.
"He loved them more than anything, he was just a great father," his brother said. "He never let any of that go to his head. He was still about being by family."
