Andrew Stanton's extravaganza will play on 290 domestic screens and 194 international screens, 115 of which will open on Friday.

TORONTO – Is it Imax to the rescue for Disney’s live-action epic John Carter?

The giant screen exhibitor is rolling Andrew Stanton’s 3D extravaganza out on 290 screens domestically, simultaneous with the North American wide release.

A digitally-remastered version of John Carter will also screen in 194 theaters internationally, 115 of which will open on Friday.

Imax plans additional runs internationally for the 3D pic over the coming weeks.

The international roll-out on super-sized Imax screens could bolster the $250 million Disney release as surveys show the 3D film only opening in the $25 million to $30 million range.

John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs and stars Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins.
