John Edwards Faces Life-Threatening Health Condition

John Edwards is facing his most difficult challenge yet -- a life-threatening heart condition.

The former presidential candidate appeared in court on Friday, Jan. 13 to seek a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month, according to CNN. A federal judge revealed that as a result of Edwards’ medical condition, his trial would be postponed until at least March 26 while the former North Carolina senator seeks medical treatment.

Judge Catherine Eagles has reportedly been in contact with Edwards’ cardiologist, who has scheduled him for surgery next month. According to court records, Edwards is required to provide a written medical update by Feb. 28.

Edwards is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts in connection with donations to and payments from his ill-fated 2008 presidential campaign. He is accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws, though he denies all charges.

In December of 2010, Edwards’ wife Elizabeth died of metastatic breast cancer. The couple had separated that year shortly after the media firestorm surrounding Edwards’ affair and illegitimate child with Rielle Hunter. With his wife, Edwards has four children aged 32, 29, 13 and 11.
