John Mayer Is Completely Obsessed With Watches
The singer waxes poetic about his favorite accessory to The New York Times.
From the way he speaks about them in a recent New York Times interview, John Mayer might just be even more into watches than he is guitars — or women. Apparently his love of timepieces has been a lifelong thing. The singer told the newspaper that he slept with his head inside a cardboard box as a kid, because that’s where he kept his prized possessions, specifically his watch.
“When you’re a kid, you don’t have much, so you are building these imaginary, macrocosmic worlds out of these really small things,” he explained. His first watch? A Star Wars–themed Armitron digital timepiece that had pictures of C-3PO and R2-D2. “I remember looking at it, and it was my friend,” he said. “It was one of the biggest things I ever owned in my life, if you were to amortize it in terms of where you were in your life and what it meant to me.”
Since then Mayer, 37, has amassed quite a collection, which he estimates is valued in the tens of millions. He also told the paper that many of his ex-girlfriends (which, take your pick, include Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry) called his obsession a “syndrome. I think you’re born a watch person. Even if you don’t own a watch for a while, you either get it or you don’t.”
After all his gushing over timepieces, maybe we can expect a track off his next album dedicated to them. After all, he told the NYT, “It would take a lot of poetry to explain it.”
