John Singleton to Executive Produce Indie Movie 'As the Freak Takes You'
The low-budget movie is written by Ka'ramuu Kush, who will also direct if a crowdfunding campaign is successful
Filmmaker John Singleton has signed on to serve as executive producer of the independent movie As the Freak Takes You, which is being written and will be directed by Ka'ramuu Kush.
Kush's debut feature tells the story of a woman, Summer Hughes, who is bisexual. It explores polyamorous relationships, sexuality and spirituality.
Singleton met Kush while Kush was writing the pilot for Solomon, a scripted television show telling a contemporary story based on the biblical story of Solomon.
Singleton says he wants to help support a deserving and bold emerging talent.
Singleton is developing Solomon along with Michelle Manning as a movie. He is currently working on a biography of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.

"His work is intelligent and visceral, and he understands the craft," says Singleton. "I see an edgy, unapologetic disposition in his work. He deals with things that others are either afraid to deal with or unable to sensitively touch."
Kush says the movie will cost somewhere above the $100,000 he is currently trying to raise on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. He says it could "stretch to $200,000."
"Our ideal budget would be $500,000," says Kush, who hopes to shoot in summer 2015. "But I'm a guerilla filmmaker. I can make shit look good with an iPhone and flashlight if I have to."
Since Nov. 24, his appeal has raised just over $5,300 as of Thursday afternoon.
"We need more stories about women," Kush says. "And I think women want to see more stories about themselves that reflect their intelligence and depth without sacrificing things like sexuality and vulnerability."
