Johnny Depp to Sell His Art Collection Amidst Divorce

Johnny Depp is selling his collection of artwork by Jean-Michel Basquiat amidst his public divorce with estranged wife Amber Heard.
Christie's auction house announced Thursday that the Alice Through the Looking Glass actor will be selling nine paintings, which he's collected over the past 25 years, by the famed American artist. The auction will be held June 29-30 at King Street as part of Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Auctions event.
"Nothing can replace the warmth and immediacy of Basquiat's poetry, or the absolute questions and truths that he delivered," Depp said in a release. "The beautiful and disturbing music of his paintings, the cacophony of his silence that attacks our senses, will live far beyond our breath."
Depp's decision to auction off his collection comes on the heels of his separation from Heard. The actress filed for divorce on May 23, citing irreconcilable differences and asking for spousal support from Depp. Heard was granted a restraining order against the actor following her claim that the actor assaulted her in the past.
Though there have been reports that the divorce could be costly for Depp, divorce attorney Jonathan Wolfe, who is not representing either party, told The Hollywood Reporter that the domestic violence allegations won't impact the financial outcome of their divorce case. However, he noted, "the publicity has been brutal and should make everyone involved focus on reaching a settlement now."
