Johnson leaves no doubt

'Static' quadruples nearest rival

The biggest sales wave of Jack Johnson's career puts the former pro surfer at the crest of the Billboard 200 again.

"Sleep Through the Static" is Johnson's second No. 1 album, but its 375,000 units sold more than double his previous best week. Of that total, a rad 139,000 (37%) were digital downloads — the biggest frame for a digital set since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking download sites.

The Johnson juggernaut swamps the new discs from a pair of multiplatinum rock veterans. Sheryl Crow debuts in the runner-up position with her sixth studio effort, "Detours," while Lenny Kravitz arrives at No. 4 with "It Is Time for a Love Revolution."

Meanwhile, Crow must be thinking, "All I wanna do is have a No. 1." Her bow represents another frustrating flirtation with the top spot: Crow's past four albums, including a hits disc, have peaked at No. 2. The Missouri-born singer-songwriter has hit the top 10 seven times and sold more than 16 million albums since 1994 but has yet to top the chart.

Kravitz's first album in nearly four years earns his highest chart position for a studio set, besting the No. 10 peak of 1995's "Circus." His "Greatest Hits" reached No. 2 in 2000.

Veteran Canadian crooner k.d. lang cracks the top 10 for the first time with "Watershed," 20 years after she first hit the chart. Her "Ingenue" reached No. 18 in 1992.

Expect to see some Grammy winners and performers notch significant sales bumps on next week's chart. Will Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters," the surprise album of the year winner, resurface on the Billboard 200 after its two-week chart stay in the fall?
