Julie Taymor's 'Tempest' to close Venice fest

Helen Mirren stars in Shakespeare adaptation

Julie Taymor's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" will screen Sept. 11 as the closing-night film at the Venice Film Festival.

Fest director Marco Mueller cited Taymor's "trademark visual flair and creative direction" in announcing its selection Monday. Helen Mirren stars in the lead role traditionally played by a man.

"Tempest" had been headed for a Miramax release until Disney put that unit up for sale. Instead, it will be distributed through Disney's Touchstone label, beginning with exclusive runs Dec. 10, with additional markets in following weeks -- which will put it in prime Oscar-courting territory.
