Justin Bieber Sends New Canadian Organ Donor Registrations Soaring
The spike follows the pop phenom retweeting to his 16 million followers a dramatic plea by a 20 year-old Ottawa woman awaiting a life-saving lung transplant.
TORONTO - He’s not saving lives, but Justin Bieber has caused a dramatic rise in new Canadian organ donor registrations.
The Trillium Gift of Life Network on Tuesday reported it has been deluged with over 1000 new online registrations since last Thursday.
That’s when a 20 year-old Ottawa woman, Helene Campbell, made a personal plea via Twitter to raise the number of organ donors as she awaits a lung transplant in Toronto.
Then on Saturday, Bieber responded to Campbell’s request by retweeting her plea to his 16 million followers.
“@alungstory i got the word …. You have amazing strength. I got u. #BeAnOrganDonor,” Bieber wrote on his Twitter account.
By Sunday, the Trillium Gift of Life Network’s beadonor.ca website reported 565 new donors, “thanks to Helene, her team, and all the Bielibers out there!”, the life-saving organization reported on its Facebook page.
That tally then crossed the 1000 new online donor registration mark early Tuesday.
