Justin Bieber's Holiday Giving: By the Numbers
UPDATED: The 17-year-old pop phenom celebrated the spirit of the season by raising funds and awareness for several nonprofit organizations, including donating a portion of album sales and performing a charity concert.
On Nov. 1, Justin Bieber kicked off his Believe charity drive on a quest to raise millions of dollars by the time his 2012 album, Believe, hits stores. His first order of business was a Christmas album titled Under the Mistletoe, donating a portion of all proceeds to charity.
Among the nonprofits to benefit from Bieber's goodwill are Pencils of Promise; Project Medishare for Haiti; City of Hope; Make-A-Wish Foundation; Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Musicians On Call; and the Grammy Foundation. In a press release to promote the project, Bieber said that each organization was chosen for their emphasis on education, youth wellbeing and music.
"I am launching the Believe Charity Drive because I know firsthand that if you believe in your dreams, everything is possible," he said, asking fans to donate their time -- or any monetary amount -- no matter the size. "The Believe Charity Drive directly benefits charities that are making a difference in the world… I know that with your help we can make a change."
On his website, Bieber lists several charities in need of support, encouraging fans to choose one that speaks to them. Among those named are domestic and international organizations including Teenage Cancer Trust, Starship Foundation, Kika and Bambi Foundation.
And the ambitious 17-year-old didn't stop there. Bieber embarked on a media blitz in promotion of his latest studio effort, not only hitting the usual circuit of late night and daytime talkers, but stopping by a Food Bank in his native Toronto for a surprise visit to donate food just days before Christmas. The cause is one that is particularly close to his heart, as Bieber earlier donated $10,000 to the Stratford Food Bank -- where he and his mother sometimes turned for help in the past -- as well as a guitar to be auctioned off for another food bank in Winnipeg.
While heading home for the holidays, Bieber performed at the legendary Massey Hall for a charity fund-raising show, broadcast on MuchMusic and CTV. Following the performance, Bieber took to his Twitter account to inform fans that the show had raised $500,000. Proceeds benefitted the local Children's Wish Foundation, Sunnybrook Health Services and Project Medishare.
As of Dec. 21, Bieber had also announced that Under the Mistletoe had sold more than 2 million copies.
The pop star has revealed that he is already hard at work on his next studio album, which will feature collaborations with Drake and Kanye West. In an interview with AMP Radio, Biebs told fans that he expects to release his third full-length as early as February or March of 2012.
While millions of families are spending Christmas Day listening to Bieber's recently matured vocals, the singer is keeping busy with his own family. Christmas morning, Biebs appeared on ABC's Christmas Day Parade and later tweeted photos with his younger siblings, three-year-old Jazmyn and two-year-old Jaxon.
"Spending time with family," he wrote. "Feels really good."
He also found time to play Santa while home for the holiday in Startford, Ontario. Bieber's childhood best friend, Ryan Butler, was the happy receipient of a brand new two-door ivory Ford Mustang convertible.
"Justin got me a present. #swag!!!," Butler tweeted along with a photo of the new ride Christmas Day.
