Justin Gorman takes Channel 4 post

Begins as head of entertainment in Jan.

LONDON -- Channel 4 has appointed Objective Productions' exec Justin Gorman as its new head of entertainment.

Gorman, who replaces outgoing entertainment head Andrew Newman, will oversee all entertainment commissioning across Channel 4 and digital web E4, reporting to Channel 4 head Julian Bellamy, taking up the post in January.

The Channel 4/Objective series "Derren Brown -- The Events" -- including the much-discussed "Derren Brown -- How to Win the Lottery," in which the magician/illusionist appeared to predict the winning lottery numbers -- is among Gorman's more recent projects.

Among his key challenges will be to nurture more productive relationships with the independent producers on which Channel Four relies for its schedule.

Channel 4's recent cancellation of youth-friendly flagship show "Big Brother" and its strategic refocusing on original fare mean Gorman will have high profile slots to fill.

"This is a key moment for entertainment on both Channel 4 and E4," said Bellamy, announcing the hire.

"The freeing up of commissioning hours and cash brought about by the decision not to recommission "Big Brother" means there are a multitude of opportunities in this area."

Gorman has previously held positions at Hat Trick, Princess Productions and Granada.
