The singer, wrapping up the "Legends of the Summer" tour Friday, is set to return to the VMAs stage.

Justin Timberlake is returning to the MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV announced Thursday that Timberlake will take the stage for an "unforgettable" performance and also will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the Aug. 25 event at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. The news broke through the cable network's social media channels.

He joins previously announced performers Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke. It was revealed by Stephen Colbert during an episode of The Colbert Report that Daft Punk was slated to perform as well.

Timberlake, who wraps up his Legends of the Summer stadium tour with Jay Z on Friday, is tied with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the most VMA nominations this year with six, including Video of the Year for "Mirrors."

Previous honorees for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which recognizes innovation and artistry in music video creation and impact, include Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Britney Spears, the last artist to receive the award in 2011.

Timberlake has won 14 VMAs, as a solo artist and as part of boy band 'NSYNC, including Male Artist of the Year, Quadruple Threat of the Year and Best Pop Video. Madonna is the only other artist to win more VMAs.

MTV Hits, MTV's 24-hour music channel, will air one hour of Timberlake's music videos and performances Thursday at 3 p.m. PT/ET.
