George Condo is a contemporary American artist who has taught at Harvard, inspired Salman Rushdie and has works hanging in the permanent collections of the Whitney and Guggenheim museums.
Hermes is, well, Hermes.
And this holiday, Kanye West thought it appropriate to combine the two in the form of a Condo-painted Birkin bag for his partner in crime, Kim Kardashian.
"#HandPaintedGeorgeCondo #HermesBirkin #OneofOne #ChristmasPresentFromYeezy" the reality star wrote Thursday night underneath an Instagram photo of the gift. The bag, which retails for roughly $40,000 sans priceless art work, features a trio of voluptuous nudes and one angry green monster (insert Kris Jenner joke here).
As of Friday afternoon, the post had received more than 188,000 likes and 27,000 comments, including "Such a waste of a Birkin bag" from user elenimack and "#epicfail" by jedebough. One follower quipped that the bag would look good paired with the floral-print Givenchy dress Kardashian wore to the 2013 Met Gala, which earned comparisons to an ugly sofa. Scrolling through the comments unearths more spirited opinions on the bag and Kim and Kanye in general, most of them unable to be shared here.
This isn't West's first collaboration with Condo, having commissioned the artist to create the cover artwork for his 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy -- with much better results.
There's no denying that receiving a piece of custom artwork -- not to mention one from a contemporary master -- is a rather epic gift that is actually quite personal and thoughtful (boyfriends and husbands, take note). But Condo's work would have, uh, likely translated better hanging on Kim's wall and not on her arm for all the paparazzi and public to see.
Tell us -- what would you think if you found this bag underneath your tree?
