NYFW: This Is How Karlie Kloss Survives Fashion Week
The supermodel shares what gets her through the season and talks about her debut in Opening Ceremony's one-act play
Karlie Kloss is no fashion week newbie. The 22-year-old has already been through dozens of seasons of catwalk craziness. And she just made her acting debut — and finale, she says — at Opening Ceremony’s super-creative presentation-slash-one-act play directed by Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill, playing herself.
“It was a new experience that I really enjoyed and it was a nice change from fashion week — a new concept and a creative way to show a collection instead of a runway show,” says Kloss, who appeared backstage at Donna Karan's spring '15 show in an Opening Ceremony bomber embroidered with her name. “Only [Opening Ceremony’s] Humberto [Leon], Carol [Lim] and Spike Jonze could pull it off. It was so special to be a part of.”
Pret-a-Reporter caught up with the catwalker at the Karan show (where Kendall Jenner also walked) to talk about how she survives the madness.
As Kloss had her toenails painted an Old Hollywood scarlet red (Deborah Lippmann My Old Flame) and extensions added (she so sweetly requested that they not use too much glue) for the complex four-strand rope braid by Eugene Souleiman for Wella, she said she was catching up on her “flood of text messages and emails that have been piling up. I like to put my headphones in and get back to the emails hanging over my head,” she said. “It’s chaotic back here, but it is fashion week.”
The beauty uses those headphones to listen to mixes she makes of classical music on Spotify. “I love listening to classical piano and zoning out,” she said. “It’s probably not what most people are listening to back here, but it’s really calming.”
As for the can’t-live-without products that get Kloss through the week? Makeup remover wipes, specifically those by Yes to Cucumbers, are her go-tos. “I always take my makeup off on the way to the next show or fitting,” she said. She also always carries an Embryolisse cream and Rosebud Salve or EOS lip balm, which she applies after cleaning off the previous show’s cosmetics in the car.
Model or not, we could all take a cue from the always-cheery Kloss.
