Karpov takes reins at TV3
Russian b'cast vet named to top postRussia's Prof-Media yesterday an-nounced a new head for Moscow-based entertainment network TV3, one of two strategic television acquisitions it made over the past year.
Alexandr Karpov, 45, a former vp of Russian television body the National Association of Telebroadcasters and the founder of Afontovo, a leading TV station in the western Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, will oversee the development of TV3 as general director, Prof-Media said.
Karpov, who most recently was in charge of rolling out and managing international business at Video International, Russia's top television advertising sales house, has a career that spans the post-Soviet development of Russian television including both regional and national executive positions.
His appointment brings key skills necessary to the development of TV3, said Rafael Akopov, general director of Prof-Media, which is the media arm of Russia billionaire Vladimir Potanin's vast industrial group Inteross.
"Alexandr possesses broad experience in the television advertising market," Akopov said. "He has overseen fast-growing foreign business at Video International and founded one of the most successful regional TV stations in Russia. His experience and authority will strengthen TV3 and bring it to a new level of development."
Karpov, who also has served as general director of Ren-TV NVS, a company that connects the regional network stations affiliated with Moscow's Ren-TV, is recognized as one of the leading figures in the development of regional television in Russia.
In October, Prof-Media paid a reported $550 million for TV3, which has about 1.8% market share in Russia. It was the second strategic purchase of the year. In February 2006, it paid a reported $30 million for little-used Moscow frequency 2X2.
