Katey Sagal Celebrates '26 Years' of Sobriety at 17th Annual Prism Awards
The "Son's of Anarchy'" actress and other stars came out to honor onscreen depictions of substance abuse and mental health
Caterina Scorsone, Julie White, Mackenzie Phillips, Dr. Drew Pinsky, and Ben Mackenzie were among the stars who gathered at The Beverly Hills Hotel for the 17th Annual Prism Awards, held Thursday.
The event––presented by the Entertainment Industries Council Inc.–– put the focus on drug addiction and mental health, by unveiling the honorees for gripping depictions of them in both television and film.
While the winners will not be made public until the ceremony airs Sept. 14, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with several of the event’s nominees and attendees about their involvement with the awards.
Son’s of Anarchy and former Married…with Children actress Katey Sagal told THR she had struggled with alcoholism but had been sober for 26 years. She said the media can help shed light on such issues.
“I know the importance of dispelling the secret, feeling like you’re not alone, seeing the consequences and relating to them, to get yourself help,” she said. All those things are the service that’s provided by accurate depictions in media."
Sagal, who played Peggy Bundy on Children, had another cause for celebration when she was reunited during the ceremony with Modern Family’s Ed O’Neill––her former co-star on the long-running sitcom.
Grimm’s Silas Weir Mitchell also shared why he was involved the Prism Awards.
“It’s important to reflect people with mental health challenges back to them, and out into the world as people who need compassion, people who need to be understood, and people who need support," he said. "We can learn what they’re going through, and they can learn from us."
The awards ceremony airs Sept. 14 on FX. Find the list of nominees here.
