Katy Perry and '50-Foot Cheerleader' Featured in 3DFF 3D Film Festival
The festival program includes the world premiere of the singer's "Wide Awake" music video and the Roger Corman cult classic.
3DFF, the all-digital festival of film, music and interactive offerings, will kick off Sept. 20 with an opening pre-show program that will showcase the world premieres of Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” music video in 3D and Foster the People’s hit single “Pumped Up Kicks” from the 3net original music series From the Basement.
The festival, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary, will spotlight films ranging from Experience Montreux 3D, a concert film shot at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival to 3D docs like Storm Surfers 3D and River Monsters 3D to movies like Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader, produced by Roger and Julie Corman.
This year’s festival will take place at new locations at Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 as well the JW Marriott Los Angeles, L.A. LIVE, The Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles, Club Nokia, The Conga Room and The GRAMMY Museum, all located within the L.A. LIVE sports and entertainment district in downtown Los Angeles.
The three-day festival, presented by RealD, 3net and LG Electronics, will honor the Cormans as well as Quincy Jones and Montreaux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs, who both appear in the Montreaux documentary, with its Digital Stars of Hollywood Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Cormans will screen Cheerleader, their first 3D film, produced for Epix, on Sept. 22. The Digital Stars of Hollywood Award Show will take place earlier the same day at the Conga Room.
3DFF will present multiple 3D documentaries, including Storm Surfers 3D and River Monsters 3D by 3net and Jonathan Kay’s N’Nai Legend of the Dolphin, featuring the voices of such stars as Kate Winslet, James Franco and Whoopi Goldberg.
Features to be screened include War of the Worlds: Goliath in 3D, a steampunk anime feature from executive producer Kevin Eastman, creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine, billed as the first large-scale 3D feature to come out of Malaysia. Written by David Abramowitz and directed by Joe Pearson and featuring the voice talents of Adrian Paul, Adam Baldwin, Peter Wingfield, Mark Sheppard and Matt Letscher, the movie, screening Sept. 22, revolves around a battle between earth’s forces and invading Martians in the early 2Oth century. A panel with the filmmakers will follow the screening.
The fest’s Best of 2012 program also will include the U.S. premiere of Street Dance 2, from presented by Phase 4 and Vertigo Films. Directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini, the film stars Tom Conti, Sofia Boutella, George Sampson, Falk Hentschel and Stephanie Nguyen.
The festival’s 3DFF Horrorshow sidebar returns this year with a double feature on Sept. 21 of Dimension Films’ horror spoof Piranha 3DD, directed by John Gulager, and a midnight screening of the U.S. premiere of Screen Media Films’ Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-animation, written and directed by Jeff Broadstreet and starring Andrew Divoff, Jeffrey Combs, Sarah Lieving and Melissa Jo Bailey.
3DFF’s 3ology Short Film Program will feature more than 40 shorts and music videos from around the globe, including the Berkeley Lab’s Flying Through the Known Universe 3D short film, which was developed in partnership with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The shorts program will also feature The Legend of the Seagullmen: Battle of the Deep Sea Diver, directed by David Dreyer.
3net, the 3D TV network partnership from Sony, Discovery and IMAX, will world premiere and preview a number of its 3D programs at the festival.
