Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man continued to hold a wide lead over a crowded field of competitors Thursday, including new entry Katy Perry: Part of Me.

Katy Perry's microbudgeted concert documentary posted an opening-day gross of $3.1 million, only good enough for a fifth-place finish. The 3D pic from Paramount's Insurge label cost a modest $12 million to produce and is on course to earn in the low- to mid-teens through Sunday.

That's substantially lower than the openings for fellow Insurge pic Justin Bieber: Never Say Never ($29.4 million) and Disney's Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour ($31.1 million), though those films debuted outside of summer.

Paramount believes Part of Me, receiving a glowing A CinemaScore, will have a long run thanks to strong word-of-mouth and good reviews. On Monday, the studio hosted fan sneaks in 100 theaters across the country for Perry's millions of Twitter followers.

Part of Me -- which charts Perry's meteoric rise to fame and her California Dreams concert tour -- also opens in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. this weekend.

Amazing Spider-Man topped the Thursday box office with $15.8 million for a three-day cume of $75 million.

So far, Marc Webb's superhero tentpole, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, is turning in the best performance of any July 4th film outside of the original Transformers in 2007. It's expected to earn $125 million to $140 million during the course of its six-day debut and already has taken in north of $50 million overseas.

Amazing Spider-Man will be playing virtually around the world this weekend after rolling out in only 11 foreign markets last weekend. By Sunday night, its worldwide tally could be well north of $250 million.

Universal's R-rated comedy Ted stayed at No. 2, grossing roughly $8 million for a pleasing seven-day cume of nearly $88 million.

Brave, from Pixar and Disney, came in third Thursday, grossed $5 million for a domestic total $154.3 million. The animated tentpole is entering its third weekend.

Magic Mike, from Warner Bros. saw a nice bump from July 4th, grossing $4.5 million for a seven-day total of $57.2 million.

On Friday, Universal opens Oliver Stone's R-rated crime drama Savages.
