KCRW Becomes First U.S. Radio Station With a Spotify App
Featuring 100 songs from the influential station's playlists and hand-picked by its DJs, the app can be accessed through any device.
Santa Monica's popular radio station KCRW has partnered with streaming music service Spotify to deliver the first US radio collaboration with the service, called the "KCRW Music Mine for Spotify."
Modeled after the station's popular iPad app Music Mine which debuted last fall, KCRW's Spotify app will feature a list of 100 hand-picked songs from the station's DJs scheduled to rotate on a daily basis in tandem with its on-air playlists. The app also allows users to download recent shows from the station, as well as subscribe to the various playlists they have on offer.
REPORT: Spotify Developing Online Radio Service
"Spotify's musical offerings are tremendous and as music consumers adapt this technology in their listening habit, KCRW will be right there offering a curated list of the best music from around the world," said Director of New Media for KCRW Anil Dewan in a statement.
The move is part of a greater initiative on KCRW's part to bring the Music Mine technology to a wider variety of platforms in the hopes of allowing listeners to have more freedom in their choice of content. Last week the station launched a new HD2 channel that will broadcast 24 hours a day called Eclectic24, and teamed up with iHeartRadio in January as one of the first stations to simulcast music and news.

Spotify, for their part, recently began offering free radio streaming across its mobile platforms, with custom playlists created based on track, artist, album, or genre, complete with a thumbs up or down option, similar to what Pandora offers. KCRW's app, though based on the station's playlists, does not have a radio function.
