Nike Air Jordans Are the Elusive Must-Have Shoes in 'Kicks' Clip (Exclusive Video)
"Staying true to yourself is much cooler than following the crowd," says Christopher Jordan Wallace, the son of Notorious B.I.G. "Just because something is popular doesn't mean you have to like it."
Christopher Jordan Wallace isn’t really buying into a buddy’s shoe story in The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive clip of Kicks.
The inner-city coming-of-age drama, from first-time director Justin Tipping and also starring Jahking Guillory and Christopher Meyer, revolves around the theft of a pair of flashy Nike Air Jordan 1s. "Friends overexaggerate situations and try to make themselves sound cool to each other," said Wallace of the clip, which shows how Guillory's Brandon says he got his new shoes.
The son of Notorious B.I.G. — previously seen in the 2011 dramedy Everything Must Go and the 2009 biopic Notorious (in which played his father as a young teen) — plays the comical sidekick, Albert. “Even in serious situations, he always finds a way to make you laugh,” Wallace tells THR. “But the toughest part was maintaining a certain calmness while delivering my lines. Almost everything Albert says is inappropriate — it was a bit of a challenge saying my lines without laughing on every take!”
Wallace — who hopes his next project is a TV role — believes Kicks sends a message to audiences, especially younger viewers. “Material items are not everything — that new iPhone or those new Jordans can be taken from you at any moment. We all should focus less on material items and learn to appreciate the little things in life, such as our health and our friendships,” he explains. “Staying true to yourself is much cooler than following the crowd. Wear the shoes that you think are cool. Just because something is popular doesn't mean you have to like it.”
Kicks hits theaters Sept. 9.
