The announcement of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphies' impending divorce instantly became a hot topic around the Internet, sparking a slew of trending topics on Twitter as well as on Web search engines.

The reality star, often a target of public scrutiny, became the subject of an outpouring of quips, outrage and, in some cases, indifference on Twitter, where so many people commented on the news that it has sparked at least nine trending topics on the social-networking site, according to Trendistic, which tracks Twitter trends.
 
News of the couple’s split peaked on Twitter at 9 a.m. PT Monday, with 1.75% of all tweets dedicated to Kardashian. Among the popular topics were “#ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage,” “72 Days,” variations of the couples’ names, “filing for divorce,” “Wedding” and “Marriage.” The terms “Money,” “Getting” and “Already” were also popular, with many — though not all — of those tweets related to the Humphries' divorce.

Arguably the most frequent trending topic, also lasting past the Monday peak, is "#ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage," with comparisons being made to “the NBA lockout” and “Taylor Swift’s speech before Kanye took the microphone.” The most retweeted message, according to Slate magazine, was "that pause after Dora the explorer asks you a question."

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries also ranked as the respective No. 3 and No. 5 most searched Google terms on Monday, according to Google Trends.

On Yahoo, the top 10 hotly searched topics Tuesday afternoon — more than 24 hours after the news broke — continued to be dominated by the Kardashian clan. The top searches included Kardashian; Humphries; her mom, Kris Jenner, who is talking about the divorce news while on a promotional tour for her new book, Kris Jenner … and All Things Kardashian; and her sister, Khloe Kardashian.

The couple tied the knot Aug. 20, just 72 days before Kardashian filed for divorce citing “Irreconcilable Differences.”  It was the second marriage for Kardashian, who previously wed music producer Damon Thomas in a secret Las Vegas ceremony in 2000. They were divorced in 2004.
