'Less Than Kind' Gives Final Salute to Maury Chaykin
WHISTLER, B.C. – Among his more than 120 film and TV credits over 35 years before Maury Chaykin died unexpectedly in July 2011 at age 61 years was his last gig – a recurring role in the Canadian family sitcom Less Than Kind.
So HBO Canada is giving a final salute to the late actor by making the death of his character, family matriarch Sam Belcher, central to the 13-episode story arc for the homegrown comedy’s upcoming third season.
"The challenge for this season was to write a comedy and drama about a family recovering from sudden and tragic loss as we experienced with Maury,” Mark McKinney, who showruns Less Than Kind, said.
The season will start with the unexpected death of Chaykin's character, which leaves the family struggling in a world without him.
McKinney said that sitcom narrative reflects what the series’ producers, writers and cast faced in the weeks and months after Chaykin’s death.
Besides Less Than Kind, Chaykin’s screen credits included A Nero Wolfe Mystery, Entourage, Dances With Wolves, Casino Jack, Boston Legal and CSI.
He was born in 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Toronto in 1974.
Less Than Kind is produced by Breakthrough Entertainment and Buffalo Gal Pictures.
