'Knight' notches 8 wins at Key Art Awards

VIDEO: Batman sequel nabs 3 awards; Raimi takes Visionary honor

Superheroes were center stage at the Hollywood Reporter's 38th annual Key Art Awards, held Friday night at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles.

Sam Raimi, who has directed Sony's three "Spider-Man" movies, accepted the 2009 Visionary Award, given to a filmmaker who inspires movie marketers.

And "The Dark Knight," director Chris Nolan's second Batman movie, led the list of award winners, taking home eight prizes, including three best of show awards for its theatrical poster, theatrical TV spot and home entertainment print.

The animated "WALL-E" was a close runner-up, earning seven awards, including one best in show citation for home entertainment, new release packaging.

Warners, which fielded "Knight," and Disney, which released "WALL-E," earned 10 awards each, as did Paramount, thanks to a mix of films that included "Iron Man," "Tropic Thunder" and "The Godfather: Coppola Restoration" DVD.

Sony rounded out the top four studios with eight wins.

Design firm BLT & Associates, which worked on campaigns for "Knight," "Iron Man," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Juno," among other films, led the agency list with 13 awards.

Ignition, which worked on films as varied as "Pineapple Express," "Saw V" and "Religulous," followed closely with 12 awards.

The Visionary Award was presented to Raimi by Eric Mika, publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and vp, Nielsen Entertainment Group.

"I'd like to thank all my creative peers who I learn so much from in the marketing of these movies," said Raimi with his award in hand. "I'll try to live up to this great honor."

In addition to the "Spider-Man" movies, Raimi has directed such films as "The Evil Dead," "Dark Man," "A Simple Plan" and the current humor-laced horror movie "Drag Me to Hell." As a producer, he has also had a hand in movies such as "The Grudge" and "Boogeyman" and their sequels.

At the Contemporary, a new venue for the awards, finalists and winners were showcased in digital installations throughout the museum, with a streamlined awards presentation focusing on the best in show winners.

Awards were handed out in nearly 60 categories, from which the 11 best in show awards were chosen.
