CANNES -- Sebastian Koch ("The Lives of Others") and Julia Jentsch have signed on to star in Constantin Film's adaptation of Theodor Fontane's classic 19th century novel "Effi Briest."

Jentsch ("Sophie Scholl -- The Final Days") will take the title role of a young woman caught between an arranged marriage with the much older Baron von Instetten (Koch) and an ill-advised love affair.

Juliane Koehler ("Downfall") has also signed on to the project, playing Effi's mother Luise von Briest.

Hermine Huntgeburth ("The White Massai") will direct the period piece, which is set to begin shooting on original locations in and around Berlin on Sept. 3.

Huntgeburth is reteaming with her "Massai" producer Guenter Rohrbach for "Briest."

Rainer Werner Fassbinder famously adapted Fontane's novel for his "Effi Briest," which premiered in Competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1974. That film starred Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla, who is coming to Cannes this year for Fatih Akin's In Competition title "The Edge of Heaven."

Beta Cinema, which sold Constantin's "The White Massai" and "Downfall" worldwide, has picked up international sales duties on the new "Effi Briest."
