Kylie Jenner Dishes On Her Sold-Out Lip Kit
From selling out in under a minute to being a perfectionist in the lab, the youngest Kardashian-Jenner opens up about her latest endeavor at the lip-kit launch celebration.
"Thirty seconds," Kylie Jenner told Pret-a-Reporter of how quickly her highly anticipated lip kit flew off the virtual shelves. "It was under a minute."
It should come as no surprise that the 18-year-old's products, $29 each on LipKitByKylie.com, nearly broke the Internet with their high demand. After all, there are thousands of tutorials and "get the look" posts floating around the web claiming to know which brand she actually uses and promising to teach Kylie wannabes how to re-create her infamous pucker. It was this request from her fans — 43 million and counting on Instagram — that prompted the recent high-school grad to get into the lip biz.
On Monday afternoon, we caught up with the budding beauty mogul at the Kardashian's Dash boutique on Melrose, where, behind the throng of paparazzi and screaming fans ready to bust down the door, Kylie quietly celebrated the kit's success with friends like Jordyn Woods and wig master Tokyo Stylez, as well as plenty of requisite Sprinkles cupcakes — most of which went untouched by the bodycon-clad (and perfectly contoured, for that matter) crew. Also making an appearance was Caitlyn Jenner, who showed her support in the way the Kardashian-Jenners do best: by twinning in matching all-white ensembles and taking plenty of selfies.
"I literally refreshed the page and it was like, 'sold out,' and I was like 'greaatttt,' " said Jenner of her Cyber Monday success. "I didn’t want people to be mad but it was also really exciting. But I’m going to have another round before Christmas. It’ll be the same colors, and then I’ll probably have new stuff around Valentine’s Day." But though she started small, the makeup maven believes that a lip kit is just the beginning. "I for sure want to have a successful makeup line and do everything," she said of her future, "but I just need to figure out how and with who and really see what I want to do."
And unlike most celeb lines, hers is not just the perfect pout on the packaging. Jenner was in the lab working with technicians and chemists to get the formula to her perfectionist standards. "That was like my favorite part," said the mogul-in-the-making of trekking to the labs to test the product. "They just make it right in front of you and you change like little things, colors. I needed it to be perfect and I tried it on and I was like, 'No, sorry, this just isn’t right,' and I changed my mind a lot on what colors I wanted to release. But I think I figured it out."
The resulting colors, Dolce K (a warm rosy brown), Candy K (a blush nude) and True Brown K (deep chocolate brown), offer simple yet universally flattering shades for all of Jenner's fans. "At first I was like only going to do one or two [colors] but I was like — I feel like there needs to be some variety, especially since so many people have different skin tones."

The self-produced line, which was distributed under Jenner's own King Kylie LLC, looks to be the beginning of what could become Jenner's own beauty empire — a venture that her sisters support with only minor requests. "[My sisters] have been texting me like, 'I’m not supporting you if you don’t give me some!' " she laughed of her famous fam. "So I’m sending them all stuff today."
