Kylie Jenner Slammed by 'Hunger Games' Star for Wearing Cornrows
"[You] fail to use your position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards your wigs," Amandla Stenberg wrote about Jenner.
Not everyone is a fan of Kylie Jenner's new hairstyle.
The 17-year-old reality TV star posted a photo to Instagram on Saturday of herself wearing cornrows. "I woke up like disss," she captioned the selfie.
One person to respond with a comment on the photo was 16-year-old actress Amandla Stenberg, who wrote that Jenner should be using her fame in ways that are more beneficial. Stenberg played Rue in the first installment of the Hunger Games franchise.
"When you appropriate black features and culture but fail to use your position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards your wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter," wrote Stenberg.
Jenner responded to Stenberg's comment by firing back with, "Mad if I don't, Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden [Smith] or something." This is a reference to Stenberg having recently posted photos of herself with Smith at the prom.
The issue of the appropriation of black culture is clearly close to Stenberg's heart. In April, a video went viral in which she called out various white celebrities for borrowing from black culture to make money, including saying that Miley Cyrus has used "black women as props."
