Kyra Sedgwick Reveals She Snapped at Adrian Lyne During 'Flashdance' Audition (Video)
"The Closer" actress talks about one of her scariest -- and bravest -- acting moments during THR's Emmy roundtable.
Kyra Sedgwick has played the strong-willed and vocal Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on TNT’s The Closer for seven seasons, and it turns out when she was a up-and-coming actress she had some of the same swagger as her character.
Sedgwick sat down with several other drama actresses for The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Emmy roundtable to swap acting war stories and talk about their careers. Sedgwick was joined by Claire Danes (Showtime's Homeland), Mireille Enos (AMC's The Killing), January Jones (AMC's Mad Men), Julianna Margulies, (CBS' The Good Wife) and Emmy Rossum (Showtime's Shameless).
During the interview, the actresses were asked about this scariest moment, whether that be a challenging role, a scary audition or a nerve-wrecking scene. Sedgwick thought of the time when she audition for the 1983 film Flashdance.
“My agent told me I was supposed to wear a leotard, heels and no tights,” she said. “I had such bigger balls back in those days. I thought, ‘I'm not wearing a leotard. Instead, I'll wear a little miniskirt and high heels.’”
That wasn’t the end to her bravado either. During the actual audition, director Adrian Lyne’s phone rang, and he picked it up.
“I turned to him and said, You're not going to answer that phone call. I'm auditioning for you,’” Sedgwick said. “Today, I don't think I would ever do that.”
Sedwick may not have gotten that role, but she went on to win a Golden Globe Award in 2007 and an Emmy Award in 2010, both for her work on The Closer.
Among the other topics the drama actresses discussed at THR’s roundtable were disagreements with directors (Jones revealed the sex scene she questioned), nudity on screen (Rossum said it fit her Shameless character) and their stressful schedules (Margulies calls TV work a “nonstop train”).
