LACMA Partners With Film Independent for New Movie Series

A new lead programmer, who is being sought, will work with Film Independent's programming department to curate the new series.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is partnering with Film Independent, the nonprofit that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, for a new film series, to be sponsored by the New York Times.

The partnership begins immediately, with new programming to begin in September.

A new lead programmer, who is being sought, will work with Film Independent's programming department to curate the new series.

The series will offer previews of feature-length narrative and documentary films; archival films and repertory series; conversations with emerging and established filmmakers and artists; international showcases; family films; and special guest-curated programs. Monthly postscreening receptions will also be held.

Ian Birnie, who has been serving as LACMA's consulting curator in its film department, will be leaving this fall. His final film series will be a Tim Burton retrospective this summer, which will complement the Burton exhibition opening May 29.
