Lady Gaga Goes Monochromatic With Her Oscars Makeup
"This is the perfect balance of sexy, rock 'n' roll and elegance," says artist Sarah Tanno.
When makeup artist Sarah Tanno needed a dose of inspiration for Lady Gaga's Oscars look to pair with her all-white outfit on Sunday night, she didn't turn to the greats in front of the camera, but rather, those behind it.
"After I saw the iconic white Brandon Maxwell creation, I got inspired by photographers like Helmet Newton and Guy Bourdin," says Tanno, who was also the hand behind Mother Monster's David Bowie-inspired look at the Grammys. "No specific photo, just the all-over vibe," she mused. "I wanted everything to be monochromatic, bold and new, but something that would still feel timeless 10 years from now."
After prepping the skin with Sisley's Radiant Glow Express Mask and Eye Contour Mask ($128), followed by the ultra-hydrating Sisleÿa L’integral Face Cream ($525), Tanno opted for coverage using the peach-toned Sisley Phyto-Teint Expert in #1 ($137) and set the look with Sisley Phyto-Poudre Libre loose powder ($95). Tanno defined cheeks with Sisley Phyto-Touche Illusion d’ete, topped with a sweep of Sisley Phyto-Blush Eclat in Peach.
That same soft coral tone also made an appearance in Gaga's eyes, which were the main focus of the look. Tanno outlined her eyes with Sisley Phyto-Eye Twist in Topaz ($50), then created a wash across the lids combining Sisley Phyto-Ombre Eclat ($48) in shades of Mango, Toffee and Burgundy.
To open the eyes further, Tanno added shimmery shades including Pearl and Silver into the mix, then contoured the lids with satin copper and velvet brown shades from Sisley Phyto 4 Ombres Dream ($115), and Sisley Phyto-Khol Star in Smoked Topaz ($57) for increased definition along the lash line. Lashes were lengthened with Sisley So Intense in Black ($67), and brows were treated to a natural look with a combination of Eyebrow Pencils ($57) in Blonde and Cappuccino.
Says Tanno, "This is the perfect balance of sexy, rock 'n' roll and elegance.”
