Lady Gaga Okays Weird Al 'Poker Face' Parody (Video)
The song will be included in a medley called "Polka Face."
Lady Gaga has given the okay to Weird Al Yankovic to parody her song "Poker Face." The tune will be part of a medley on Yankovic's new album Alpocalypse.
The pop star has also resolved a misunderstanding with Yankovic over "Perform This Way," his version of "Born This Way." Gaga's manager had initially refused permission for Yankovic to release the tune but Yankovic says things changed once Gaga herself heard the song.
Yankovic tells Billboard, "Even though her manager was presenting it as such, she had never once approached Gaga, so it was news to her when people were...asking, 'How come you're not letting Weird Al do his parody? She was not aware of it at all, and when she actually did hear the song she loved it and gave me permission."
Yankovic ended up releasing a rough version of "Perform This Way" on YouTube (video below) so that the Gaga camp could weigh in on his lyrics. He usually sends his parody lyrics to artists to obtain approval but had to take the new tact with Gaga. He says, "I'd never done that before. I figured if you already have the lyrics, if you don't find those offensive then you're not going to find it offensive when you hear the fully produced version of it -- which is why I was kind of knocked for a loop when the answer we got back was 'no.' "
In addition to "Perform This Way" and "Polka Face," Yankovic's Alpocalypse CD includes versions of Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" ("TMZ"), Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." ("Party in the CIA"), B.o.B's "Nothin' On You" ("Another Tattoo") and T.I.'s "Whatever You LIke," with the same title. He also recruited Ray Manzarek of The Doors to guest keyboard on an ode to the group called "Craigslist."
Alpocalypse will be released on June 21.
