Lady Gaga's Stylist Debuts Sleek, Chic Designs at NYFW

No shock-factor antics for 'THR' cover star and red-carpet stylist-turned-designer Brandon Maxwell, who wanted a "Gwyneth Paltrow in pink at the Oscars"-vibe for his first collection.

Lady Gaga’s longtime stylist Brandon Maxwell, who is credited with steering the "Bad Romance" singer’s style in a more timeless and elegant direction (think custom Alaia at the Oscars), kept it clean and modern (and very wearable) for his own debut collection. The Texas-native showed sharp and sexy suits, sculpted dresses and a parade of black evening gowns (one with a voluminous organza cape for a hint of theatrical flair) to a packed house at New York City’s Mr. Chow — including superstar client Gaga, Alexander Wang, VMan's Stephen Gan and a few of his closest friends and family.

Gaga, who Periscoped the runway show from her account, posted on her Instagram earlier in the day: “I’m officially not just Gaga today, I’m “Gijhss” [pronounced] like Gigi without the I. @brandonmaxwell had called me that for almost 10 years and tonight Gijhss the assistant will be there for her best friend and talent Brando she loves so much.”

Here, Maxwell, who previously created Gaga’s wardrobe for her Cheek to Cheek tour with Tony Bennett and her plunging silver Grammys gown, fills Pret-a-Reporter in on his new line.

Pret-a-Reporter: What was the inspiration behind your debut collection?

Brandon Maxwell: “Well, in case you couldn’t tell [laughing], everybody from my family and my best friends are all here tonight, so that was my inspiration. I really tried to put so much of my life growing up into my collection. Even as a kid, I was always taking bed sheets and wrapping them around my sister and then putting a cummerbund on her waist and tying it up, which just seems so wrong to do to a seven-year-old. But listen, I was a pageant mom from the beginning. What can I say? So I just tried to inject as much of family and personal experiences into this collection as I possibly could.”

How would you describe the Brandon Maxwell woman?

“She’s smart, talented, funny, fearless and she does good for the world. She’s humble, she’s selfless — and she’s powerful.”

No outrageous colors or shock-factor styles a la Gaga tonight. Why’d you decide to go clean and classic — and somewhat subdued with the colors?

“It was the colors I liked growing up — a lot of my memories are of my mom and I sitting together and watching every awards show while eating dinner and doing our [red carpet] note cards. I’ve just always loved that black, blush and white classic, timeless American woman. You know what I mean? It’s like Gwyneth Paltrow in pink at the Oscars. It’s that sort of feel.”

What will be the highlight when you look back on tonight and your first New York Fashion Week show?

“I’m going to to go see my mom and my dad and my siblings and grandparents now—and have it end on a happy note, so I’m really excited about that."
