Katie Nelson Thomson Joins 'Last Week Tonight With John Oliver'
Katie Nelson Thomson has been named senior talent producer of HBO's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver. The half-hour topical comedy series debuts Sunday, April 27, at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
Thomson was most recently senior broadcast producer on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight. Prior to that, she spent most of her career at ABC News working with Barbara Walters, producing segments and pieces for 20/20 and The Barbara Walters Specials. She helped produce award-winning coverage of Sept. 11, including first interviews with Rudy Guiliani, Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush after the attacks, as well as Walters' exclusive interview with Monica Lewinsky, seen by more than 70 million viewers -- the highest-rated news event broadcast by a single network.
Before joining ABC, Thomson was a producer for the BBC in London, a producer on CNN's Larry King Live in Washington, D.C., and a researcher-writer for The McLaughlin Group. She has produced interviews with every U.S. president since Jimmy Carter and more than a dozen international leaders. Thomson's pieces have won various awards, including the Peabody and Emmy.
Last Week Tonight is being touted as a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events and will also include interviews in front of a studio audience as well as field reports. The show is from Avalon Television. John Oliver, Tim Carvell, Jon Thoday and James Taylor are executive producers, with Liz Stanton producing.
