Lewis Black to give Just for Laughs keynote
Confab to get first-time comedy boot camp for filmTORONTO -- Billed as a keynote address, Lewis Black will more likely deliver one of his trademark acerbic rants at the upcoming Just for Laughs comedy conference on July 15, while Andy Kindler ("The Late Show With David Letterman") will return to Montreal to roast comic royalty with his perennial "State of the Industry" address.
The three-day comedy conference will also see the return of the TV comedy pitch event "Pitch 'Til Your Sides Split," and a first-time comedy boot camp for film, where selected writer/producer teams pitch feature comedies to a panel of experts before possibly applying to the 2010 Telefilm Canada features comedy lab at the Canadian Film Center in Toronto.
The comedy boot camp is the latest move by Telefilm Canada, Canada's film financier, to turbo-charge domestic boxoffice for Canadian movies with out-of-the-box initiatives that get homegrown product in front of industry decision-makers.
Telefilm is also sending two Canadian feature comedies, Emile Gaudreault's "Fathers and Guns" and Rob Stefaniuk's "Suck" to unspool as part of its Canadian Front film showcase at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from March 17-22.
Just for Laughs' comedy conference, which gathers studio executives, broadcasters, comic agents, producers and filmmakers in Montreal for panel discussions and deal-making, is set to run from July 15-17.
