Lily Tomlin Replaces Kathryn Joosten on TV Academy Board
Jonathan Murray and David McKillop join newly formed Reality Programming Peer Group after reality TV, documentary groups split.
Actress and comedienne Lilly Tomlin has been elected a governor of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to serve out the term of the late Kathryn Joosten, one of the stars of Desperate Housewives who died in June.
Tomlin will represent the Academy’s Performers Peer Group until the term expires at the end of this year and could be re-elected after that.
As part of a change in the way reality TV and documentary shows are handled, the Academy also has elected Jonathan Murray and David McKillop as governors for the newly formed Reality Programming Peer Group. Murray's term runs until December 2013, while McKillop’s term runs through this December.
Reality and documentary TV professions used to all be part of the Nonfiction Programming Peer Group. Earlier this year, the academy’s governors voted to create the first Reality Programming Peer Group and rename the existing group the Documentary Programming Peer Group. Mark Samels and Dan Birman, who had represented the Nonfiction Group, now are governors of the Documentary Programming Peer Group.
Tomlin first came to notice in the 1960s as one of the zany stars of Laugh-In. She has since gone on to star in movies, on Broadway and as a concert and recording artist, as well as continuing on TV. She has co-produced and starred in eight TV specials. Her recent credits include being the voice of Ms. Frizzle in the animated series The Magic School Bus and a role on the HBO series Eastbound & Down. She is currently in production on two movies: the comedy Admission (which stars Paul Rudd) and the independent film The Road Home.
Murray is considered a reality TV pioneer as producer (with partner Mary Ellis Bunim) of the seminal 1992 MTV series The Real World. Their series include The Simple Life, Making the Band and Love Cruise, as well as the feature The Real Cancun.
The Real World is now in its 27th season, while the producing pair also have on the air Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Mrs. Eastwood & Company, Bad Girls Club and more.
After working for Discovery Channel, McKillop was appointed executive vp programming for A&E and the Bio channel in April 2011. He has been executive producer of Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Ax Men and Top Gear.
