Lionsgate, Samsung Turn 'Divergent' Sequel 'Insurgent' Into Virtual Reality
Beginning Feb. 27, fans can enter an immersive society by donning an Oculus-powered Gear VR headset.
Insurgent, the second installment in the Divergent franchise, doesn't hit theaters until March 20, but Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment label and Samsung on Wednesday said fans can enter a 360° immersive world where they are captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction. They just need to don a Oculus-powered Gear VR headset from Samsung.
Beginning Feb. 27, the four-minute VR experience Insurgent — Shatter Reality features stars from the upcoming movie release, including Winslet, Miles Teller and Mekhi Phifer. Wearing the VR headset, fans will see Jeanine and her faction cohorts testing them with experimental serums as they are transported from the heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to standing in front a massive, fast-approaching locomotive.
"Virtual reality elevates the world of Divergent to a whole new level by creating a uniquely exciting and immersive experience for our fans,” said Lionsgate chief marketing officer Tim Palen in a statement Wednesday.
Insurgent will be released in both 3D and 2D on March 20. The second installment follows Tris (Shailene Woodley) on a quest for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago.
The film, based on author Veronica Roth's best-selling novel of the same name, also stars Theo James, Octavia Spencer, Ansel Elgort and Jai Courtney. Robert Schwentke directs from a screenplay by Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback.
