Locarno fest preps for gala opening
Festival dresses up for 'Brideshead Revisited'ROME -- The Locarno Film Festival gets under way Wednesday, with the European premiere of Julian Jarrold's "Brideshead Revisited" in the city's Piazza Grande expected to be the highlight of Day 1.
The Swiss festival, which concludes Aug. 16, will host a rich variety of programs in its 61st edition, including a 17-title competition lineup made up entirely of world and international premieres.
The event also boasts an Open Doors sidebar dedicated to up-and-coming filmmakers from Latin America, a focus on Japanese animated film character Kitaro and a special 19-title lineup selected by Italian auteur Nanni Moretti, himself the subject of a retrospective at the festival.
"We feel very, very proud of the overall lineup we are able to offer to film fans in Locarno for the festival," third-year artistic director Frederic Maire said.
This year's event will be penultimate one for Maire, the first Swiss director for Locarno in a generation, who will leave after next year's festival to take the reins of the Swiss Film Archive's governing board in Lausanne.
