Locarno fest turns the page to 2009
Plans retrospective of Japanese comics, animeROME -- The Locarno Film Festival and the Turin-based National Film Museum said Thursday that they are collaborating to produce a comprehensive retrospective about the relationship between Japanese comic books and the anime films they help inspire.
The program will be called Manga Impact, a reference to the Japanese comic books. It will take place at next year's Locarno Film Festival in August and be repeated at the Turin museum facilities in parts between September and November.
According to Locarno officials, the project will "offer a fascinating journey through genres and styles (of anime films) ... exploring its more distant roots from both narrative and graphic perspectives."
It will include feature films, shorts and television episodes, along with an exhibition of artwork from magazines, merchandising, toys and video games.
The Manga Impact initiative is the first new project announced for the 2009 Locarno event, which will be the swan song for artistic director Frederick Maire.
