Long 'Night' comes to an end

Weekly comedy series wraps in August

TORONTO -- "Ed and Red's Night Party," Canada's longest-running weekly comedy series, will end a 14-year run on domestic broadcaster Citytv on Aug. 31.

The move was made by Rogers Media, which last year acquired five Citytv TV stations for CAN$375 million ($370 million) from rival CTVglobemedia and now wants to attract more female viewers.

The series' foul-mouthed puppet host, Ed the Sock, who is voiced by Toronto-based Steve Kerzner, is regarded as the inspiration for the Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog character that appears regularly on NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien."
