L.A. Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda Hospitalized for Heart Attack
UPDATED: The 84-year-old was in New York representing his team at the MLB draft.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager and baseball legend Tommy Lasorda has been hospitalized in New York City after reportedly suffering a heart attack on Monday. The 84-year-old was there to represent his team at the MLB draft.
TMZ sources say that the heart attack was “mild” and that Lasorda is expected to be released from the hospital as soon as Wednesday.
The news comes as a surprise to fellow managers at the draft, as Lasorda appeared to be fine the day before. He was seen signing autographs at a media gathering and appeared in good spirits while dining and a local Italian restaurant Monday.
CBS Sportswriter Jon Heyman tweeted that Lasorda "wasnt feeling well at the mlb draft last night. [MLB Commissioner Bud] Selig insisted he be escorted to a local hospital."
A representative for the Los Angeles Dodgers tells THR that an official statement is forthcoming.
UPDATE: The Dodgers have issued the following statement:
Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda suffered a mild heart attack Monday while in New York for the Major League Baseball 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Lasorda, 84, was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for treatment.
Doctors inserted a stent to correct a blocked artery in Lasorda’s heart. He is resting comfortably and in stable condition.
“The doctors confirmed I do bleed Dodger Blue,” Lasorda joked. “I’m looking forward to being back at the stadium to cheer on the Dodgers.”
