Vietnam's "Floating Lives" starring Dustin Nguyen will be one of 25 films screened at the Luang Prabang Film Festival.

The second annual event features a 26-film slate.

BUSAN, South Korea -- The Luang Prabang Film Festival announced its 26-film slate for the second edition of the week-long, open-air event, to be held in the Laos city Dec. 3-10.

Showcasing Southeast Asian cinema, the free event features films from every Southeast Asian nation except Brunei, according to festival director Gabriel Kuperman.

Five of the films selected are from Thailand, which Kuperman noted is in part because of the close linguistic ties between Thailand and neighboring Laos. Operated on a shoestring budget, the festival is not yet able to subtitle its films in Lao, and therefore the Thai films will be easier for audiences to understand, he said.

The schedule includes three films from Laos, and also a contribution from Myanmar, Hexagon. "Myanmar actually has an active film industry. It's just that few films make it outside the country," Kuperman said.

Cinematically, Myanmar is perhaps better known as the setting for Luc Besson's The Lady, his biography of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, which screens in Busan on Oct. 12, with Besson and star Michelle Yeoh slated to attend.

Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of Laos with a population of just over 100,000. All of the film festival's screenings are free and take place outdoors.
