Magnolia joins Xbox's pic library

Console also launches Marketplace in Italy, Spain

Microsoft is adding Magnolia Pictures to its roster of studios contributing to the movie lineup on Xbox 360's Live Marketplace in the U.S. and Canada.

The gaming console also is launching Marketplace in Italy and Spain, with deals in place with studios already contributing films to the U.S. virtual storefront, including Warner Bros., Paramount and MGM. With the addition of the two new markets, Marketplace will be active in nine countries.

The additions come as Microsoft begins deployment of a new user interface, labeled New Xbox Experience, which will give Marketplace a more dynamic look and feel. This week also marks the debut of Netflix on Xbox, complementing the la carte download-to-own offerings with a deeper library of films that can be streamed on a subscription basis.

"We've seen, as the studios have, a tremendous consumption level of video by people who are heavy Xbox users," said Blair Westlake, corporate vp of Microsoft's Media & Entertainment Group.

Among the Magnolia titles coming to Xbox in the U.S. are "The Host," "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" and "The World's Fastest Indian."
